I was an invited keynote speaker at the Global Fashion Conference in Madrid, November, 2012.

My talk gleaned from what I’ve learned through DEED: Development through Empowerment, Entrepreneurship, and Design, a research initiative at The New School that brings together students and faculty from design, management, and development. Faculty prepare teams of students on campus for international fieldwork during which they collaborate with artisans in emerging economies and local professional designers to support sustainable income-generating opportunities through craft-based services or products. This presentation will use examples from DEED’s collaborations to discuss how design can be used as a vehicle for development, and how the empowerment of both the artisans as well as the university’s students, are key to its successes.

Below are my slides.
